I'm a very overweight type 1 diabetic. I have recently started to seriously consider getting the Lap Band procedure. My endocrinologist says she has had many patients have great success with their diabetes control and weight having this done. I'm just looking to see if anyone cares to share their personal insight and stories regarding this weight loss method.
Thanks in advance.

I went to teh website for lapband and arranged to talkw ith a consultant. I found out I was not obese enough ( only 60 pounds) and I was way to active( I hike climb and do other exercises) they said that the band could slip if i were climbing a waterfall.
soo I was not a candidate.
Butthey did suggest ebcause of my swallowing disorder a liquid diet as a majority. So that is what I am doing now. 70 percent shakes and liquids and only a sm,all percent high fiber foods I can swallow.
I have esophageal damage from years of untreated GERD.
The web site offers loads of information on lapband types and proceudres

Whenever diabetics need to have an operation and the doctors have to cut into them, they always say that it's more dangerous for diabetics to have an operation because they can get more infections and be less able to recover well.
Whenever obese people have to have an oopreation, the doctors tell them that obese people having an operation are more susceptible to having more infections and will have more trouble recuperating because of the extra weight.
But somehow, they all think that an obese diabetic should go and get the lap band. It's not as big an operation as it used to be, but it does have a lot of effects that might bring on infections and troubles recuperating.
Also, as you lose weight fast, you aren't necessarily doing it while building up your health.
I was very overweight and I was lucky enough to find a diet that worked for me. I lost a lot of weight but I also lost my diabetes at the same time.
Each month I dieted and tried to exercise and eat healthy foods, I got healthier and healthier. For each pound I lost, I got stronger. You can't always say that about people who have had a lap bad implanted inside them.
So many people have lingering health problems from that operation. I urge you to lo look around for a regular diet that you will like to follow and lose weight that way. Start gentle walking as your exercise and you will be healthier from day one.

I am on slimfast. I boost up teh shakes withan extra egg or whey protein.
First let me tell you I havetried both medicafst and slimfast. Slimfast tastes better....
also if you really work at it slimfast..Not as far as diet goes, but to prevent flavor burn out. You do loose 5 pounds teh first week, and then three the following few weeks and then down to 1 . Then you plateau.
then you hop off and go back on again and continue like that.
I have 60 pounds to loose.....
yeah I know I dropped 35 a two years ago but when i cant exercise it really hurts.
anyway, I have lost so far 5 pounds..... I am using slimfast and mild exercise.
I also combine with south beach and when i get hungry i reach for boullion or coffee until i can eat.
Beleiev me I knwo wher yuou are coming from, its not easy. But maybe off of here a group can craete a sub area for weight loss and do it together?
