My father is a diabetic, so is my uncle (paternal). For the past 15 years I have been living under the fear of having diabetes but never got checked.

Finally I got it checked recently at the age of 39. Mercifully the blood glucose count is within the normal limits.:)

Regular exercise and a vegetarian diet allowed me to indulge in taking sweet dishes without pushing the blood glucose level up.

Wish I had tested myself a decade ago to know the truth and lived more confidently.

I am glad to hear that you got that checkup. And also you being on a proper diet and taking care of yourself that can help decrease your chances of getting it.

Thank you ladygirl. There are many people who are in the denial mode. Hope that they come out of it and go for tests to know the truth.

IT might be genetic. You may not get it though it just all depends. We will never know unless you get tested.

You are welcome. I had a friend who was consider a pre-diabetic and the doctor told her that she have to change her eating habits and also to lose the weight or she would have the disease. So she did what the doctor told her to as she lost the weight and she got the checkup again and was no longer a pre diabetic.

Too bad some of us can't see what we do to ourselves untill it's too late. My grandma died from complications from diabetes, my dad was just diagnosed, and 5 of my uncles on dads side of the family have it and still it never entered my mind that maybe I should eat a little less junk and start exercising and losing weight. At 51 I feel better healthwise than I have in years. I guess some of us have to be scared into doing what we should be doing on our own.

Good on you writeman that you had yourself checked out and have an understanding of what could happen.:)

ladygirl99,

At least you are lucky that you know you could get it. For me, it was a sneak attack. Looking back, I was at risk, but no one in my family has ever had it, so I didn't even think it was possible for me to get it. Bummer...

Now that I have come to grips with it, I can say that it isn't something that you should fear. It may not even be something you can avoid, so just keep yourself aware of your current status and try to do what the doctor recommeds to avoid getting it. If the worst happens and you get it, then you get it, it will not be the end of the world. Perhaps the end of donuts... but not the world.

A lot of it is genetic so even if your family has a history it doesn't mean you will get it. All you can do is keep your health and diet on track and hope for the best. Like Serra said, if you do get it, it's not the end of the world.:)

Perhaps the end of donuts... but not the world.

Ohhhh the pain! A low carb burrito wrap with cream cheese and sugar free jelly rolled up tastes almost as good and is easy on the BG level. :)

I went for a majority fo my life under theidea that I was just borderline or prediabetic.
If oyu look at my family I am 16 th generation direct bloodline paternal diabetic. This shoudlahve been a clue!
But the doctors even as far back at 1998 didnt want to admit I was diabetic. I had fastling glucose levels of 285 and nothing was done.
sooo... if you are luckiy enough to have a doctor that willing to say it, you are soooo lucky.
I do suggest getting acheap glucose test kit to keep tabs.. its like a free monitor at walgreens/cvs/walmart if you buyt the small box of strips for abotu 20 bucks, or for 14.99 you can get the meter and strips together. YO may not need it but its agood way to keep tabs once a week or so.
