My new 'thing' is to try and have my grain products be whole grain. Not only does the fibre mean you eat less calories but whole grains release sugars far more gradually and help regular blood glucose.
One thing to watch is that many products say whole or multigraon but its just a scattering on the top. All or at least the first listed ingrediant must be whole grain to ensure the product is 50-100% whole grains....

I knew that whole grain foods were a lot better for you for a healthier lifestyle, but I didn't realize that they produced sugars slower to reduce blood glucose. Thanks for the post. I guess I learn something new every day.
I am trying to get plenty of whole grain in my system now to help with my health and I am concerned about developing diabetes and am trying to change my lifestyle of eating sugar foods. I have recently bought some whole wheat flour and made some biscuits with them and they taste pretty good.

This is always a good idea. I've been buying pasta that is whole grains, and often my bread, too. It's a good feeling knowing that I'm doing that for the family's health.
I like the pasta idea. Where I used to work we home made some salads to sell and we made a couple of pasta salads that we put onions, tomatoes, squash, cucumber and green pepper in. I have made this salad at home using the grain pasta and using a lite/light italian dressing and I think this is a very healthy dish.
One was spaghetti salad and the other was pasta salad made with the curly colored noodles. I think the grain curlies are probably better for you than the colored noodles but I'm not for sure.
Choose high fiber varieties of bread, cereals, pasta and rice whenever you can. Also try more unusual grains like bulgur wheat and couscous as substitute to rice and potatoes.
