Hi DesertBear7,
It looks like this board is pretty new. We'll have to start chatting and hope others join in.
I'm a mom to 7 kids and am type2 diabetic.
currently I'm not under a Dr's care due to not having insurance.
I'm keeping my numbers between 100 and 140 most days.
I hope we can chat.

Hi guys,
Thought I'd stop by for a chat. Currently I do not have diabetes, but my husbands mother does and I had two grandmothers who did. So I joined this forum to get some answers concerning wether or not my children may end up with this. Any input would be awesome. Hope to see you around.

When I was little I used to go for mysterious blood tests, urine tests, and shots every three months.
When I was about 7 I remember the doctor calling m,y parenstand I into his office and explaining I was borderline diabetic, but it can be ocntroleld with diet and some some pills.plus he gave me syntharoid.
All along until I was about 12 I went every three months for these shots. When I met my husbdan he said I drank like a diabetic. I shoved it off. I didnt want to beleive it. But then,, at 3 am on a Sunday July 21st I found myself in the ER with a diabetic abscess. he has every right to say " i told you so"/. My BGs were out of control. And after teh DR. receieved all of my medical records from my life so far we disocvered that my BGS were running in the mid 240s consistan;t with a 285 fasting. These should have been keys that Dr.s picked up. But they didnt.
I embraced my diabetes, even writing a book called Factoring Diabetes.
I chose to go on insulin after my pancrease gave out and the oral medications quit working.
Now I love my insulin,, its wonderful and very freeing. I wouldnt change a thing other than to have been put on it when I was younger and the Drs. saw but ignored the trend.
My husband did, why didnt they.

It's a good thing your husband recongnized the symptoms even though your doctors didn't. It sound like your better off knowing and dealing with it, instead of it comming back in later years to bite you!

Yes, and embracing it/ tackling it head on seems to be the healthy way to deal with it. There are a lot of things we need to just make work for us and this is probably one of those things.

So do we agree that diabetes is more or less hereditary?

Some families seem to have a higher number of diabetic relatives than others. Perhaps it's linked to cultural practices relating to food and alcohol consumption.
Now the blame is being placed on school vending machines and children's choices of what they prefer to eat and drink at school.

My family doesn't have history of diabetes other than my uncle but he was my uncle by marriage. But still I am concern as this disease becomes common.

7 kids. I applaud you for that if nothing else. Bless your heart and good luck in all you do. I have some of those kid things too. WoW.
I am going to a clinic this coming week as I do not have the money for my regular doctor right now.
Are you familiar with the medical aid programs available in your location. I could try to help you out with that if you need some advice.
I learned on here that there are some areas that have reduced/ sliding scale pharmacies. I do not have that service available in my area but we do have places that base your doctors visit on your income.
:p Ithink diabetes is differently hereditary! I just found out I have type 2 about a month ago and I am thin, I have always eaten right and exercise every day but several people in my family have diabetes. My little sister went into a diabetic coma and almost died when she was about 20 years younger but is doing great now and has a diabetic pump and doing good. I am still learning about it all. I t was hard through Thanksgiving but I kept my sugars down.

You should have a test for antibodies to make sure you are not a LADA, or slow onset Type 1. You sound like you could be with your history.
People with LADA can go for awhile without insulin until their immune system slowly destroys all of their beta cells.
Many doctors are poorly educated when it comes to Type 1, and misdiagnose Type 1 adults as Type 2. Drives me nuts!!!
Please get re-tested for Type 1 antibodies. There is a very good chance you may have it if you are thin and your sister has Type 1. The genes for Type 1 and Type 2 are not the same.
If you are Type 1, you will need insulin at some point in the near future, and you could get very sick and go into a coma if not properly diagnosed. Please speak to your doctor and tell him your family history of Type 1.
It is also possible your family has MODY, a rare genetic form of Type 2 that happens to thin people.
