West Texan

Just wanted to share my success story. After being diagnosed with Type 2 on Dec. 23, 2006, I buckled down, went to the Diabetes education classes, started counting carbs, cut out sweets, started exercising, began eating massive amounts of veggies (at least for me) and being serious about taking care of myself. Alas, no more chicken-fried steak and cream-style gravy (a West Texas staple and the ultimate comfort food).
Thankfully, we caught my diabetes early during my annual physical and my numbers weren't that out of whack to begin with. Best of all, I've got a very supportive wife and an older sister that has been dealing with Type 2 Diabetes for some time now.
Thus, I'm very happy to report that my A1C went from 7.7 to 5.7 as of 4/4/07, weight has dropped from 256 lbs. to 230 lbs. and blood glucose readings are generally well within my target range. And I don't feel like I'm depriving myself. Instead of ice cream and Girl Scout cookies (we've still got several untouched boxes in the cabinet) I have a handful of peanuts (lots of fiber), celery (my wife hates all that crunching sound I make), fruit and low-carb tortillas and Delightful bread (both low carbs and calories).
My wife is getting motivation through Weight Watchers, but my motivation comes from the instant feedback from my OneTouch meter and the great feeling of keeping my numbers under control.
I just got through with my three-month visit to my diabetes educator on 4/5/07, and I plan on keeping up the good work. Wish me luck. -- Doug
