Should a diabetic also be testing their HbA1c? I read somewhere that it is important to monitor your HbA1c. If any one has feed back please let me know, I have a good friend who is a diabetic who is currently not monitoring his HbA1c. Thanks for any advise.

Most of the time your HbA1c is tested every three months by bloodwork from your primary care doctor. The HbA1c test is important especially to your doctor. This test gives a person and doctor and idea of how your blood sugar has been over 3 months, so if you are good and eat right before you see your doctor and have a good glucose reading that day, but have not been the rest of the time, your doctor will know by your HbA1c reading. The ideal HbA1c reading or number is 7 or below, 7 is approximately equivalent to a blood sugar of 130 or so, it would be great to shoot for lower.

As stish said, it is entirely likely that your friend has nothing to do with their HbA1c at all. The doc would do that for them, or have it ordered, and the only time they would know anything about it would be if it came back really bad. In which case the treatment or management plan would be altered.

There is nothing related with hbA1c to diabetes. But there is also nothing wrong in testing them, i will give a shot at such situations.
