Greetings!

I went to the doctor last May for a regular physical and found out my fasting bg was 166! My doc was fairly casual about it....said I should lose weight and the numbers would come down. He told me not to worry at all about what I ate.

I decided to be more proactive. I have lost 32 lbs. so far and I test my bg in the mornings...and I run around 100. I have been trying to figure out what to eat and not eat. I can't go for nutritional counseling as without a diagnosis - insurance won't pay. I'm happy to NOT have a dx so far!

I have eliminated the 'white foods' since they spike blood sugar. I'm trying to stay with mostly foods with a low Glycemic Index. I'm still unclear about things like popcorn...mixed reviews. How do I know how many carbs I can eat? What about whole wheat pasta??

Any tips or hints for a vegetarian would be GREATLY appreciated! I do eat eggs and dairy....no meat.

Thanks! I have gotten so much from other forums. :D

Hello Vered4, welcome to the forum.
Looks like you have your numbers going in the right direction.
My best advice to you is test, test, test, and then after you have done that, then test. Different foods react differently with everybody which is why you will never see a stardard list of foods for diabetics. Most veggies are usually good except taters, corn, beets, etc but some can eat them with no problem. All pasta is out with me as it raises my bgl too much for my liking.

Try some popcorn and test 45min 70min and 120min and see how it affects your numbers. That's really about the only way to tell.

3 Cups of popcorn = 15 grams carbs. It's generally considered low GI, but as mentioned, you need to try it for yourself and see. Good job on being proactive! In 80% of Type 2 diabetes cases, it is preventable with lifestyle changes! Way to go!
